Low-cost texting between the United States and the Philippines

29 Apr 2009Ubuntu Linux is getting popular these days, and Mark Shuttleworth’s goal to fix the Microsoft dominance bug is inching closer every day. Yet the realization of toppling Microsoft may be a tall order because you have to disturb the ecosystem that Microsoft has built over the years. It’s not that Microsoft is evil per se but as the Linux community says, there is always an option and it’s free, and way even better across a number of applications.
As much as I love to use Ubuntu, there are some apps that are not fully ported yet or if it’s ported, not all has the same native functionality found in Windows. (Oh I hear ya. Crossover or Wine simply doesn’t cut it. Windows emulation is slow and inefficient).
Take for example, Skype. The Linux version of Skype is terrible in terms of sound clarity and features. Also, I would like to see Linux versions of Google Picasa, Digsby, WebVideoCap and Evernote. Until then, I guess I still have to use Windows but for basic web surfing and some Office applications, Ubuntu Linux will be fine. Plus, it’s free.
